WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT COLUMBIA CI?

*According to the FDLE Criminal Justice Profile Report, the DOC Correctional Officer Population in 2010 was 18,393 and in 2012 15,326.
*In 2012 Sergeant Ruben Thomas was tragically murdered while on duty by an inmate at Columbia CI.
*In 2012 DOC submits a budget proposal for FY 13-14 that only requests funds to reduce the lapse factor to 5% (if the goal is to be 5% short….??) The proposal states that the existing lapse factor in its 12 highest risk prisons, one of which is Columbia, is from 6.7% to 15.4%.
*Last session the legislature omitted correctional officers and correctional probation officers from a special issue pay raise to address parity of pay.  Florida Statute 943.023 requires that the legislature be given a plan reflecting parity of pay study of corrections/probation officers with that of law enforcement officers in this state in order to ensure fair and adequate compensation for corrections/probation officers.  DOC has the greatest turnover rate and largest disparity of pay that gets more disparate as one moves up in the career service ladder.
*In 2013 the turnover rate for Columbia CI was 16.9%.
*In November 2013, Secretary Crews speaks before the legislature and thanks them for the 245 positions that were added the year before.  However it was reported that a gain could just not be made, because every month DOC loses more officers than they can hire.   Officers leave for the county for what is often a 12k pay increase immediately and significantly more as they are promoted.
*In February 2014 an inmate attacks and injures 2 officers at Columbia CI.
*In March 2014, an inmate shoots 2 inmates at Columbia CI.
The average DOC officer is 42 years old and has 10 years on the job.  These officers put themselves in harms way to protect and serve.  Many of these officers are raising families.
VALUES? HEART?  CORRECTIONS AND PROBATION OFFICERS DESERVE PARITY OF PAY AND SAFE WORKING CONDITIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
