Returning To Tallahassee To Produce A Documentary On The Fight Of Public Employees In Florida

April 21, 2013

Two weeks ago, Florida Public Employees Partnership (FPEP) President Robert Asencio traveled to Tallahassee to meet with state legislators and deliver a message of dire need from 1.3 million public employees – and from the millions of men, women and children across Florida who depend on them.

That message can be summed up simply:

Fairness. We need fairness, and we deserve it.

A number of bills making their way through the 2013 legislative session are patently unfair to public employees and their families. And they’re also unfair to middle class Floridians who count on state workers in so many different ways, every single day.

Rather than the “reform” bills their sponsors call them, these are thinly veiled attacks on vital public sector services and employees – and on citizens that need them. One of these unfair attacks would weaken and threaten the highly successful Florida Retirement System (FRS) for public employees. Another would further weaken and threaten our public school system.

On the recent trip to Tallahassee, FPEP’s message was delivered loud and clear: Our legislature and state can and must do better by its state workers and the millions whom they serve.

Some legislators not only listened but heard and seemed ready to heed the FPEP call for fairness. Others…clearly need more convincing.

And so, with only two weeks left in this 2013 session and critical votes on these bills coming up soon, FPEP will return to the state capitol and insist on the fairness we all deserve.

But this time, we’re taking a camera crew.

In news and politics, a picture is worth 1,000 words. And video…good video is priceless. So FPEP is going to document these follow-up legislative meetings on video. As the FPEP message is delivered to State Representatives and Senators on both sides of the aisle, the camera will be rolling. The goal is to produce a documentary intertwining this material with revealing facts, background information, news footage, stories from public employees themselves, and insights from the citizens they serve. We plan to present a 5-minute “sneak peek” preview of the documentary at a ‘Workers Unite Film Festival” special event FPEP is sponsoring Tuesday evening, May 14th at Cinema Paradiso in Fort Lauderdale (more on that very soon).

But here’s the thing. WE NEED YOUR HELP.  We need you to be partners in producing this film and telling this story. We’re seeking Associate Producers, Co-Producers, Producers and Executive Producers – donors and sponsors at the $25 level and up, all of whom will receive ONSCREEN CREDIT at the end of the film.

Please, donate as soon as you can. When you do, please specify “Film Donation”, and join the ranks of a proud team of FPEP producers who’ll forever after share onscreen credit for bringing this important story to the screen.
