The following was posted on the Florida Public Employees facebook page. We are publishing it as a reflection of the frustrations shared by Public Employees who faithfully serve the citizens of this great state.
From: Charlie Sullivan
Just posted this to my Representative:
Mr. (Halsey) Beshears I would like to say hi and let you know a few facts about my frustration as a public employee:
First – I would like to explain what service I provide to the state. I’m a correctional officer. I am a 17 year veteran with DOC. thank the Lord. We in corrections protect the public from the people who were removed from society for breaking the law.
We face murders, drug dealers, child molesters, thieves, and anybody else society can’t deal with. We do this with pride. We will always feel good about what we do for our fellow citizen of Florida. Now with that being said; Our leaders have used us as a scapegoat for their inability to lead and be creative to find revenue when faced with a budget shortfall.
I understand they have to be fair to the taxpayers of Florida. I want you to know public employees also are tax payers. We can’t be unfairly penalized every year that there is a shortfall. We’ve giving 3% of our pay to the FRS, we have not had a raise in 6 years, and we are made out to be the reason the “taxpayers” are hurting.
This is a flat out lie.
It was our leaders’ over spending and not being responsible with the taxpayers dollars – when times were good. Rewarding buddies with no-bid contracts is not what Florida needs anytime. I am a hard working professional who is dedicated to public safety. I also am dedicated to a family, who expects to have food, lights, transportation, water, and a roof over their head. I’m asking you to take these things into consideration when voting this session.
We are just like any other taxpayer. We are hurting too.
