FLORIDA PUBLIC EMPLOYEES
By Robert Asencio, President Florida Public Employees
Friday night, a peaceful protest in Dallas was disrupted by gun violence which resulted in the injury of two civilians, seven police officers and the deaths of five on-duty officers. Once again, it is with great pain and sorrow that our nation awoke today to news of yet what has become an epidemic of gun violence.
Without a doubt, this senseless and unconscionable attack extends well beyond the law-enforcement community as it is an attack on our democracy and civilization. No rock should be left unturned, no piece of evidence should go without checking, no person should go unquestioned until we find those who perpetrated this ungodly act.
Moving forward, we must all take note of the need for a change of dialogue so that we don’t accuse and incense those who would otherwise use baseless comments as justification for future attack on our nation, its people, and its protectors.
Today I stand tall with all who are committed to our nation and its democracy in protecting our freedoms and liberties from those who will attack us by killing our men and women behind the shield. And to the cynics who seek to use these events to color their views of society, I guide them towards the words of Mahatma Ghandi: “You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the whole ocean does not become dirty.”
