To whom it may concern,
The Pembroke Pines Firefighter Benevolent Associations’ mission is to promote brotherhood, unity, and more importantly, offer support to firefighters and their families in their greatest time of need. Our organization, which represents all members of the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 2292, has embarked on a special campaign that is very near to our hearts.
Niko, at just 18 months old, is the son of one of our firefighters who has his been serving the city of Pembroke Pines for over 15 years. Niko was born with a very rare disease known as Fanconi Anemia. FA is a blood disorder that inevitably leads to bone marrow failure. This failure has harmful effects on all blood cells within the body, as well as its organs, tissues and systems. More specifically, Niko is classified as Bracket 2, which is the rarest form of FA, accounting for only about 3% of all children with FA. In August of 2012, at only 3 months old, Niko had one of his kidneys removed due to a tumor. More recently, in July of 2013, Niko’s doctors advised that his bone marrow was exhibiting changes that would lead to Leukemia. Niko is currently at the University of Minnesota undergoing chemotherapy treatment and a bone marrow transplant.
Our current mission is to provide financial support to Niko and his family in these difficult times. We have made both ‘TEAM NIKO’ t-shirts and wristbands available for sale in an effort to raise funds and awareness for Niko and Fanconi Anemia. Also in the works are fundraising events like ‘The Takeover,” on January 7th, 2014. A night of family and fun, as well as raffles and prizes at Bru’s Room in Pembroke Pines, Florida.
We are all working diligently to reach out to our community for any willing assistance in our fundraising campaign. Any assistance in the campaign will be greatly appreciated. On behalf of the Pembroke Pines Firefighters Benevolent Association, we want to thank you for taking the time to read this message. Your love, support, and words of encouragement will go a long way in providing much needed support for Niko and his family during these trying times.
