By Bob Sikes – Scathing Purple Musings
Two days ago, Scathing Purple Musings reported on Rep. Manny Diaz (R-Miami) curious deflection of questions from House colleagues on his charter school bill with references to a task force.
On at least three occasions during yesterday’s house subcommittee (Diaz) deflected colleagues questions about his charter school expansion bill with references to a “task force” that was working on details. Diaz references to this task force in queries about lease agreements and the proposed state standard contracts for charter schools puzzled many observers. At the time of this post, Scathing Purple Musings has yet to learn which task force Diaz was referring.
Scathing Purple Musings has learned that the task force Diaz referred to is under the control of a top Florida charter school lobby, Florida Consortium of Public Charter Schools, is not aligned in any way with the Florida Department of Education, the legislature and is not subject to state Sunshine laws.
Diaz draws a salary of $100,000 from a board member of FCPCS, Academica presidentFernando Zulueta. Moreover, the task force doesn’t appear to have met since November of last year. This is four months before Diaz even filed CS/HB 875 in February 2014. It faces its next hearing today.
