This afternoon the Florida House Republicans answered questions regarding the closing of the FRS Pension plan to all new employees beginning January 1, 2014. This also eliminates the survivor benefit for widows and orphans for firefighters, EMT’s, Paramedics, and police & corrections officers. No passes were given to anyone who votes for the bill. Every member must vote their conscience. The often served up excuse of the day that the Senate will reject the the “wrong and ill conceived” House bill, does not mitigate the fact that every member who votes for this bill, of their own free will, believes that those who protect and serve do not deserve a pension. Fortunately the Florida Senate will receive the bill as DOA.
During the spirited questioning today Representatives Taylor, Zimmerman, Danish, Slosberg, Stark, Rangel, Richardson,Williams, Pafford, Schwartz, Rehwinkel Vasilinda, Dudley, Rader, Reed, supported first responders while Representatives, Brodeur, Passidomo, Pigman, Raulerson, Perry, Woods, Nunez, Cummings, Eagle, Baxley, Rooney, Berman, Fasano, asked questions to support the closing of the pension plan and end survivor benefits for most line of duty deaths. The final vote is expected tomorrow and will pass on a party line vote, Republicans voting against firefighters and Democrats voting for us.
