Closing the Loophole in the Florida’s Civil Rights Act that Allows for Abuse of Political Power, Corruption, and a New Form of Discrimination to Fester
The 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution states: No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.
However, due to unethical use and abuse of the Right to Work Law, Florida citizens that are not politically affiliated and registered as voters with the two major political parties (Republican or Democrat), are being denied the liberty of equal access to promotional opportunities within State employment in Florida.
Currently, The Florida Civil Rights Act of 1992 provides protection for all individuals within the state freedom from discrimination because of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, handicap, or marital status. However, political affiliation is not protected, therefore allowing for discriminatory practices to be imposed upon those in the workplace because of different political views.
At present, there are a few local municipalities throughout the State of Florida which have local ordinances to the Florida Civil Rights Act that prohibit this form of discrimination. However, it should be a statewide provision. Discrimination in the workplace creates an unjust system and hostile work environment. Especially if you are an employee within state or local government.
As the Founder and Statewide Organizer of the Florida Alliance of Independent Voters, I am asking Florida’s Legislature and the Governor to close that loophole in the Florida’s Civil Rights Act that allows for abuse of political power, corruption, and this form of discrimination to fester.
By establishing a provision to the Florida’s Civil Rights Act, all citizens of Florida will be afforded the same opportunity for advancement in the workplace based upon their abilities, qualifications, and work ethics. Not their political affiliation.
